England cricket legend James Anderson is facing an uncertain playing future after Lancashire reportedly decided not to offer him a new contract for the 2027 season.
The 44-year-old fast bowler continued playing county cricket after retiring from international cricket in 2024. He holds the record for the most Test wickets, with 704 dismissals in 188 matches.
Anderson enjoyed an impressive County Championship campaign last season, taking 50 wickets at an average of 17 while captaining Lancashire. Across his first-class career, he has claimed 1,193 wickets at an average of 24.
According to reports, Anderson is preparing to end his 25-year association with Lancashire. He first appeared at senior level for the Lancashire Cricket Board in 2000, aged 17, before making his county debut the following year.
The reported development comes as Lancashire reviews its cricket operations following a disappointing season in which the club finished second from bottom in Division Two, despite being considered promotion contenders.
The review is being overseen by interim chair Dame Sarah Storey and chief executive Richard Kenyon. Paul Farbrace was recently appointed director of cricket as part of the changes at Old Trafford.
Lancashire has yet to issue an official statement regarding Anderson’s reported departure.
