LAHORE : In a swift action following the Johar Town G-4 harassment incident, Lahore Police have arrested the ride-hailing rider after a woman was forced to jump off a moving motorcycle to escape alleged harassment officials confirmed .
The arrest came after DIG Operations Lahore Faisal Kamran took immediate notice of the viral CCTV footage and Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif reiterated her Red Line Policy with zero tolerance for crimes against women.
According to police, the victim had booked an online bike ride from Johar Town Block F-2 to Watto Palace. During the journey, the rider allegedly attempted to behave inappropriately and harassed her, forcing her to jump off the moving motorcycle near G-4 to save herself.
CCTV footage of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, shows the woman jumping off the moving bike and falling on the road. She sustained serious injuries to her face, nose, throat and head and was shifted for medical treatment.
The rider allegedly fled the scene after the incident. Following a complaint filed by the woman’s brother, a case was registered at Johar Town Police Station under relevant harassment provisions.
*DIG Operations Faisal Kamran Orders Immediate Arrest:*
Taking notice of the incident, DIG Operations Lahore Faisal Kamran directed SP Sadar to ensure immediate arrest of the accused.
A dedicated police team, using CCTV footage, ride-hailing company data and mobile location tracing, traced and arrested the accused. Police said the accused is in custody and further investigation is underway.
DIG Operations Faisal Kamran said:
> “There will be no compromise on women’s safety. The accused involved in the Johar Town G-4 incident has been arrested. Protection of women using public and ride-hailing transport is our top priority. Strict legal action will be taken.”
*CM Maryam Nawaz’s Red Line Policy – Zero Tolerance:*
Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has taken serious notice of the rising incidents of harassment of women in public transport and reiterated her government’s Red Line Policy.
The Chief Minister said her government has adopted a zero tolerance policy for crimes against women and no negligence will be tolerated.
Under CM Maryam Nawaz’s directives:
1. All ride-hailing services must be brought under a strict regulatory framework
2. QR-code panic buttons made mandatory in 82,000 rickshaws, cabs and public transport vehicles across Punjab
3. Live tracking system to be installed in all online cabs
4. Strict action against transport services failing to implement safety measures
*Safety Measures Already in Place:*
Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi said that on the directions of the Chief Minister, traffic teams are working at 45 locations across Lahore to install QR-code panic buttons. Twelve dedicated teams have been assigned specifically for rickshaws.
Shirazi said installation of QR-code panic buttons has been made mandatory to bring public transport under the regulatory framework and improve passenger safety.
Women passengers can scan the QR code to seek immediate emergency assistance in cases of harassment or other emergencies. Officials said a central control room will receive the alert and dispatch nearby police.
*Rising Concerns Over Women’s Safety:*
The Johar Town incident has raised fresh concerns about women’s safety while using ride-hailing transport in Lahore. It comes days after another assault in Mozang where police arrested a man for assaulting a woman on a scooter on Mozang Link Road on October 24, and a similar case reported in August 2024 involving a ride-hailing driver.
Police have appealed to citizens, especially women, to immediately report any harassment or suspicious activity on Madadgar 15 or through the QR-code panic button app. Helpline 1043 is also available.
Further investigation is underway.
