Harry Kane double powers England past Croatia in World Cup opener

DALLAS: England launched their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in spectacular fashion on Wednesday, defeating Croatia 4-2 in an entertaining Group clash as captain Harry Kane delivered a match-winning performance with two first-half goals.

In front of more than 70,000 fans at the Dallas Cowboys’ state-of-the-art stadium, Thomas Tuchel’s side overcame defensive lapses and a determined Croatian fightback to secure three valuable points and make an early statement in their quest for World Cup glory.

The match burst into life after just 12 minutes when England were awarded a penalty following a challenge by Croatia captain Luka Modric on Noni Madueke. The lead was restored six minutes later when Kane once again came to England’s rescue. Rising unmarked from a Declan Rice corner, the Bayern Munich striker powered home a header to make it 2-1 and move level with Gary Lineker on 10 World Cup goals for England.

Yet the drama was far from over. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Petar Musa capitalized on another defensive mistake to slot home from close range and send the teams into the break level at 2-2.

Tuchel’s halftime message appeared to have the desired effect. Just two minutes after the restart, Jude Bellingham surged forward and calmly rolled the ball into the corner to restore England’s lead.

The goal shifted momentum firmly in England’s favor. Kane, Bellingham and Nico O’Reilly all came close to extending the advantage as Croatia struggled to contain the relentless pressure.

With Croatia pushing forward in search of another equalizer, substitute Marcus Rashford delivered the final blow five minutes from time, sealing a thrilling 4-2 victory.

The result gives England the perfect start to their World Cup campaign and reinforces their status as one of the tournament’s leading contenders.
