Karachi flour prices surge as wheat rates climb

Karachi – The prices of fine flour and No. 2.5 flour have increased by up to Rs13 per kilogram in Karachi.

According to the Chairman of the Flour Mills Association, flour prices have risen due to a sharp increase in wheat prices over the past 15 days. During this period, the price of No. 2.5 flour increased from Rs119 per kg to Rs132 per kg.

Flour Mills Association Chairman Junaid Aziz said that the price of fine flour has now exceeded Rs140 per kilogram. He added that the price of wheat has climbed from Rs106 per kg to Rs118 per kg, leading to higher flour prices.

Aziz said the government should import wheat to stabilize prices. According to him, the sooner the government decides to import wheat, the greater the benefit for consumers. He warned that any delay in the decision would mainly benefit wheat hoarders.

He further stated that Pakistan would need to import at least 3 to 4 million tonnes of wheat while ensuring imports match the country’s actual requirements to avoid harming local farmers.

According to Aziz, Karachi consumes around 2 to 2.2 million flour bags per month during the summer while consumption rises to about 2.6 million bags per month during the winter season.
