KP cabinet to decide on austerity measures

The federal government has shared its austerity and fuel conservation directives with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, leaving the provincial cabinet to decide how and when to implement the measures across the province.

According to official sources, the federal recommendations cover steps aimed at reducing fuel consumption and controlling government and public-sector expenditure. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet will review the proposals and determine which measures should be introduced at the provincial level.

Sources said the cabinet would also consider a proposal for earlier closure of markets across the province as part of the broader energy-saving measures. The timing of market closures and the areas where the restrictions may apply will be decided during the cabinet meeting.

The proposed measures also include a possible three-day weekly closure of educational institutions. The provincial cabinet will discuss the proposal and decide whether schools, colleges and other educational institutions should observe the reduced working schedule.

In addition, the cabinet will determine operating hours for marriage halls, restaurants, cafes and other food outlets. The government is considering adjustments to business hours as part of efforts to conserve fuel and reduce energy consumption.

Officials said the final decisions would depend on the provincial cabinet’s assessment of the federal government’s recommendations and their likely impact on businesses, educational institutions and the general public.

The measures come as the government seeks to promote austerity and reduce fuel and energy consumption. Once approved, the provincial government is expected to issue detailed instructions covering the implementation and timings of the measures across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
