LESCO tightens grip on transformer repairs, bans unapproved workshops

LAHORE: The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has directed private housing societies to stop having damaged transformers repaired at unauthorized workshops, warning that the practice is contributing to higher technical losses and affecting the quality of electricity supply.

In an official directive issued on August 21, 2026, the Chief Engineer (O&M) Distribution LESCO instructed field officials to issue notices to housing societies found using unapproved repair facilities and ensure compliance with the company’s instructions.

LESCO said private housing societies are responsible for replacing transformers at their own expense. However, the company has observed that several societies are sending damaged transformers to unauthorized workshops or individuals for repair and reclamation.

According to LESCO, such facilities do not necessarily follow prescribed WAPDA technical specifications, potentially affecting the performance of the distribution network and increasing technical losses.

Under the new directive, housing societies have been instructed to use only registered or prequalified workshops and manufacturers approved by LESCO or other distribution companies for transformer repairs and reclamation. A list of approved firms has also been circulated for reference.

The instructions have been described as a matter of high importance and forwarded to operational managers and other relevant field formations across LESCO.

The company’s move is aimed at ensuring that transformer repair work meets established technical standards, reducing avoidable losses and improving the reliability and quality of electricity supplied to consumers in private housing schemes.
