Lights are more useful in refrigerators

In our daily lives, we come across many things that we rarely stop to think about. Some things are so common that we hardly notice them.

For example a refrigerator is an essential part of almost every home. But have you ever wondered why the lower section of a fridge has a light while the freezer at the top usually does not?

Yes most refrigerators that have both a fridge and a freezer come with a light in the refrigerator section but not in the freezer.

So why is that?

Interestingly refrigerator manufacturers have not given one clear reason for this design. However experts suggest that there are several possible explanations.

 It helps companies save money

Adding a light to a freezer is not very expensive. However manufacturers often try to reduce production costs wherever possible.

This is a simple example of cost saving.

Since refrigerators are usually placed in well lit kitchens an extra light in the freezer may not seem necessary.

Freezers are opened less often

Another possible reason is that people do not open their freezers as frequently as they open the refrigerator section.

Research suggests that freezers are usually opened less often and for shorter periods. As a result, manufacturers may consider a light less important in this section.

Ice Can affect the light

Some experts also believe that installing a light inside a freezer may create practical problems. Since freezers operate at very low temperatures ice and frost can build up around the light or its cover, which may affect its performance.

Refrigerator lights are more useful

People use the refrigerator section more frequently throughout the day.  A light makes it easier to find food drinks and other items without having to turn on the kitchen lights.

For this reason manufacturers may consider lighting a more useful feature in the refrigerator section than in the freezer. Over time we have become so used to this design that having no light in the freezer seems completely normal. In fact a freezer with its own light might surprise some of us more than one without it.
