Popular Pakistani drama Dar e Nijat has attracted widespread attention for its emotional storyline and strong performances. However, the drama is also facing criticism over the way certain relationships and sacrifices are being portrayed.
Former model and digital creator Mahnoor Rahim has now questioned the drama’s narrative. She said some of its storylines could normalize unhealthy behaviour and emotional manipulation in society.
Mahnoor particularly discussed the marriage between Zaryab and Abubakar. According to her, the characters are making major life decisions for reasons that do not justify such sacrifices. She questioned why Abubakar is being pushed into marriage because of an old obligation involving his mother and Zaryab’s family.
She also criticized the idea of sacrificing a son simply to repay a favour. Mahnoor argued that if someone wants to return a favour, there are many ways to do so without forcing another person to give up their own happiness.
Another issue she highlighted was Zaryab’s demand that Zamil divorce Hamna and marry her. Mahnoor questioned what Hamna had done to deserve being placed in such a situation.
She warned that viewers may start accepting such behaviour when it is repeatedly presented as an act of love, loyalty or sacrifice. She was particularly concerned about audiences praising Abubakar for making what she described as an unnecessary sacrifice.
Mahnoor’s comments have sparked a wider discussion among viewers. Several social media users agreed that the drama appears to romanticize emotional blackmail and family pressure.
Some viewers criticized Abubakar’s mother for manipulating him emotionally. Others said the storyline gives the impression that blindly obeying family demands is always a sign of being a good son.
Several viewers also praised Mahnoor for raising the issue. They argued that dramas can influence how people view relationships and should therefore avoid presenting unhealthy behaviour as something admirable.
The debate has added another layer to the ongoing discussion around Dar e Nijat. While the drama continues to attract a large audience, its controversial storyline is now receiving as much attention as its performances and emotional scenes.
