Michael Carrick heads into another crucial Premier League weekend under growing pressure as Manchester United look to recover from a damaging run, while Tottenham Hotspur are desperate to finally find the net in the league.

United’s latest setback came in dramatic fashion at Old Trafford, where they surrendered a two-goal advantage before losing 3-2 to Brighton & Hove Albion in the League Cup third round. The defeat increased frustration among supporters and raised fresh questions about Carrick’s start to the season.

Spurs desperate to break goal drought

Tottenham face their own growing concerns when they host Aston Villa on Saturday.

Roberto De Zerbi’s expensively rebuilt side have yet to score or win in the Premier League this season. Spurs have collected only two points from four matches and sit 17th in the table.

The club spent more than $300 million during the summer transfer window in an attempt to improve their fortunes after narrowly avoiding relegation last season.

However, their difficult start has brought back memories of the previous campaign. Tottenham also suffered a 3-1 defeat against Liverpool in the League Cup during the week, adding to the pressure ahead of the Villa clash.

Villa have made an even poorer league start, collecting just one point from four matches, meaning Saturday’s encounter could be significant for both struggling teams.

Tottenham forward Omar Marmoush urged his teammates to remain united.

“These moments build the mentality and the team together. We are all one big family and we push together,” he said.

Arsenal, City maintain perfect starts

At the other end of the table, Arsenal and Manchester City are setting the early pace.

Arsenal have won all four league matches and lead the standings, with City level on points but behind on goal difference.

Arsenal travel to Brighton on Saturday, while City host Sunderland on Sunday as both clubs look to preserve their perfect records before the international break.

City’s flawless beginning is particularly notable following Pep Guardiola’s departure, with successor Enzo Maresca quickly winning support after a 1-0 victory over Manchester United last weekend.

The early Premier League campaign therefore presents contrasting fortunes, with Arsenal and City setting the pace while United and Tottenham face important tests to prevent their difficult starts from becoming deeper crises.
