KP IGP reviews security across province, tells ASPs to lead from field

PESHAWAR: Inspector General of Police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Zulfiqar Hameed has reviewed the province’s policing, crime situation, terrorism threats and overall law and order, stressing that future police leaders must combine professional expertise with strong field command and public service.

The IGP chaired the meeting at the Central Police Office in Peshawar, where the security and policing situation in several districts came under detailed discussion. Additional IGP Operations Muhammad Ali Babakhel, DIG IT Ijaz Ahmed and DIG Operations Shakir Hussain Dawar attended the meeting along with under-training Assistant Superintendents of Police Hamza Ayub, Maryam Yousuf, Rao Muhammad Mubashir, Noor Hayat Ranjha and Tahir Mehmood.

The ASPs, currently serving in Peshawar, Nowshera, Dera Ismail Khan, Swat and Kohat, briefed the IGP about crime patterns, policing challenges, terrorism threats, law and order conditions and the measures being adopted to address security concerns in their respective districts.

The meeting also examined counter-terrorism efforts, the strengthening of the Counter Terrorism Department, police infrastructure, modern policing initiatives and measures aimed at improving the force’s operational capabilities. Intelligence-based operations, crime prevention, protection of citizens and their property, and strategies for maintaining peace were also reviewed.

IGP Zulfiqar Hameed questioned the officers on various aspects of their briefings and emphasized that field policing must remain firmly grounded in the rule of law, merit, professional discipline and public service.

Addressing the under-training ASPs, he said they would eventually assume important leadership responsibilities within the police force and therefore needed to develop a strong understanding of field realities, local security dynamics, crime trends, terrorism threats and the concerns of ordinary citizens.

He stressed that effective policing required more than administrative or office-based expertise, saying a successful police officer must also possess the ability to understand field conditions, assess threats, lead personnel and respond effectively to public needs.

The IGP described protection of life and property, prevention of crime and action against terrorism as fundamental responsibilities of the police. At the same time, he emphasized that public confidence remains one of the force’s most important strengths and urged officers to ensure that their conduct strengthens that confidence.

He directed the officers to discharge their responsibilities with integrity, determination, merit and professional competence while ensuring that police services provided to citizens are prompt, transparent and effective.

Hameed further advised the under-training officers to establish clear professional goals and priorities according to the demands of policing and to make full use of their intellectual, mental and professional abilities. He also cautioned them to maintain ethical standards throughout their careers.

Senior police officers attending the meeting also shared their views on field policing, professional development and the practical training required to prepare the next generation of police leadership.
