Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has inaugurated a fleet of green electric buses in five additional districts, marking another phase in the provincial government’s public transport expansion aimed at providing modern, affordable and environmentally friendly travel facilities.

The newly launched electric bus service has been introduced in Layyah, Chiniot, Sialkot, Okara and Murree, extending access to clean public transportation beyond the province’s major urban centres.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the chief minister described the initiative as one of the largest public transport projects undertaken in Pakistan. She said the procurement of the buses involved an investment of approximately Rs80 billion, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving the public transport network across Punjab.

Maryam Nawaz expressed satisfaction over the launch of the service, saying residents would now benefit from modern, air-conditioned buses, particularly during the intense summer season. She added that the initiative would provide commuters with a safer, more comfortable and dignified mode of travel.

The chief minister reiterated that the provincial government intends to extend quality public transport facilities to every major city in Punjab. She announced that 1,500 additional buses are expected to join the fleet during the current year, significantly expanding the network and improving connectivity for passengers.

She further revealed that the government’s long-term goal is to operate 5,000 buses across Punjab within the next five years, creating an integrated public transport system capable of meeting the growing travel needs of the province’s population.
