CM Maryam launches electric bus service in Layyah

LAYYAH: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday virtually inaugurated the Green Electric Bus Service in Layyah, extending modern public transport to the district as part of the provincial government’s initiative to improve urban mobility.

The service will provide free travel to persons with disabilities, while offering residents a safe, affordable and environmentally friendly mode of transportation.

The inauguration ceremony was held at the Layyah Sports Complex and attended by Deputy Commissioner Asif Ali Dogar, MPA Samia Atta Shahani, political representatives, government officials, traders, lawyers and members of civil society. The service was formally launched after Mr Dogar and other guests cut the ribbon.

A convoy of electric buses later travelled from the Sports Complex through Khidmat Chowk, Khatm-i-Nabuwwat Chowk, Aslam Mor, Eidgah, the Sugar Mill area and Kashmir Chowk. Residents gathered along the route to welcome the buses, with flower petals showered on the convoy at several points.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Asif Ali Dogar said the project reflected the Punjab government’s commitment to expanding modern public transport facilities to less-developed districts. He said the service would benefit students, women, senior citizens, office workers and daily commuters by providing affordable, comfortable and air-conditioned transport.

He added that the electric buses would also help reduce air pollution and contribute to the government’s vision of a cleaner and greener Punjab. The launch of the service, he said, was aimed at improving access to quality public transport and providing direct relief to residents of Layyah.
