BANNU: A terrorist attack on a police station in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district led to a fierce gun battle between militants and security forces on Wednesday. The attack prompted a large-scale security response, with additional police personnel deployed to the area as authorities worked to bring the situation under control.
According to police officials, the attackers attempted to carry out a major assault by driving an explosives-laden vehicle toward the Miryan Police Station. The vehicle exploded near the entrance of the police station, causing a powerful blast that damaged the building and several nearby houses.
Immediately after the explosion, heavily armed militants opened fire on police personnel stationed at the facility. Officers returned fire, triggering an intense exchange of gunfire that continued for a considerable period. The sound of explosions and gunfire spread panic among local residents, many of whom rushed to safer locations.
District Police Officer Captain (Retd) Muhammad Furqan Bilal confirmed the attack and said security forces responded swiftly to repel the militants. He said the situation was being closely monitored and that authorities would release confirmed details about casualties and damage after the operation concluded.
Police reinforcements were sent to the area soon after the attack to support officers engaged in the operation. Members of the Police Peace Committee also reached the scene to assist law enforcement agencies and help maintain order.
Witnesses said the powerful blast was heard several kilometres away. The explosion shattered windows, damaged nearby residential buildings and created fear among people living in the surrounding neighbourhoods.
Rescue teams and ambulances were dispatched immediately after the attack. Injured individuals were shifted to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. However, officials had not confirmed the exact number of casualties by the time of reporting.
