LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched the second phase of the Livestock Card programme, announcing Rs16.2 billion in interest-free loans to support livestock farmers across the province.
During a briefing, officials informed the chief minister that the recovery rate for loans issued under the first phase of the programme had reached 96 per cent. The second phase aims to provide further financial assistance to farmers to improve livestock management and strengthen the rural economy.
Under the programme, eligible farmers will receive interest-free loans of Rs27,000 per animal. The initiative is intended to help livestock owners meet essential expenses and improve the care and productivity of their animals.
Officials also informed the meeting that farmers would be allowed to withdraw 25 per cent of their loan amount in cash through automated teller machines (ATMs). The remaining funds will be available for the programme’s designated purposes, according to the scheme’s applicable conditions.
The initiative is part of the Punjab government’s efforts to support livestock farmers, improve agricultural productivity and increase income opportunities in rural areas. Livestock farming remains an important source of livelihood for many families across the province.
In a related initiative, Maryam Nawaz announced plans to provide free cows and buffaloes to rural women in Punjab. The move is aimed at creating livelihood opportunities for women and helping them generate income through livestock rearing.
The briefing also highlighted progress in the province’s meat export sector. Officials said agreements had been reached to export meat to Saudi Arabia, China, Azerbaijan and European markets.
According to the figures presented at the meeting, Punjab’s meat exports recorded an increase of $96 million over the previous year. The government aims to expand access to international markets and strengthen the province’s livestock and meat processing industries.
The second phase of the Livestock Card programme is expected to provide additional financial support to farmers while supporting efforts to improve animal care, increase production and expand the economic contribution of the livestock sector.
