Maryam Nawaz orders dedicated bike lanes, tighter traffic rules in Lahore

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed authorities to establish dedicated motorcycle lanes on major roads across Lahore as part of a broader plan to improve traffic management and road safety.

Chairing a meeting on traffic management, the chief minister expressed concern over repeated violations of traffic rules by vehicles operating under the Suthra Punjab Programme. She ordered officials to ensure that such vehicles strictly follow traffic regulations.

Maryam Nawaz also expressed sorrow over the death of a minor girl who was struck by a Suthra Punjab vehicle, stressing the need for stronger measures to protect pedestrians and other road users.

She directed authorities to strictly enforce the use of zebra crossings and approved the introduction of camera-based digital monitoring to improve compliance. A proposal to install alert buttons for pedestrians crossing roads was also discussed during the meeting.

The chief minister ordered a pilot project on The Mall to strengthen enforcement of zebra-crossing rules, while Ferozepur Road was designated for development as a model road in Lahore.

She further instructed officials to prevent cargo tractor-trolleys from operating on roads without proper covers, with particular emphasis on enforcing the requirement for vehicles working under the Suthra Punjab Programme.

To address congestion, Maryam Nawaz called for immediate steps to improve traffic flow at Shahdara and Thokar Niaz Baig, particularly at Lahore’s entry and exit points. She also directed the installation of traffic signals at Pine Avenue and Jati Umra Chowk as part of efforts to streamline traffic movement.
