Punjab’s handling of two high-profile criminal cases has sparked debate over judicial independence accountability and the need to strengthen the province’s criminal justice system. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s public statements have drawn support from some social media users while members of the legal community have raised concerns about commenting on ongoing court proceedings.
The controversy involves an alleged assault on a university student in Lahore and a separate case concerning allegations of rape involving a foreign woman. Both cases have renewed calls for effective investigations fair trials and equal treatment under the law.
Lahore assault case triggers public reaction
According to a report by Minute Mirror, an incident on Mozang Link Road on October 20 was captured in footage that circulated widely online. The report alleges that a motorcyclist identified as Ghulam Mustafa Umair assaulted a female student following a dispute on the road. The student reportedly suffered facial injuries, including a fractured nose and her laptop said to be worth Rs85,000 was damaged.
Police reportedly arrested the suspect on October 22 or 23. On October 24 a judicial magistrate granted him bail against surety bonds of Rs100,000 directing his release if he was not wanted in another case.
Maryam said she had spoken to the victim personally. According to the chief minister the student expressed reassurance that the government was supporting her and pursuing justice. Maryam subsequently criticised those who believe that wealth, influence or political connections can place them above the law.
Her remarks received attention on social media where some users welcomed her public support for the victim.
Foreign woman case raises legal concerns
A second controversy centres on a case registered at Lahore’s Defence C police station involving allegations of rape against Ahmed Tanveer and others. The supplied report says the accused received interim bail on October 23 with further proceedings scheduled for October 27 and November 9.
Maryam reportedly alleged that a judge had been bribed and referred to a financial trail involving London, Azerbaijan and Dubai, including an alleged payment of Rs20 million connected to a video. These claims have prompted objections from legal representatives.
Lahore High Court Bar Association President Babar Murtaza Khan reportedly called for action over the allegations. Defence lawyer Safdar Shaheen also criticised what he described as a media trial. The bribery claims have not been established in court on the basis of the information provided.
Lawyers call for stronger investigations
Legal experts quoted by Minute Mirror argued that the provincial government should focus on improving police investigations strengthening prosecution and ensuring timely trials rather than commenting publicly on individual judicial decisions.
They cited the 2018 Zainab Amin case in Kasur in which investigators used forensic evidence, CCTV footage and witness accounts to build the prosecution case. The trial resulted in a conviction and the execution of Imran Ali.
The report also raises the possibility of friction between Maryam Nawaz and Lahore High Court Chief Justice Justice Alia Neelam. However, claims of an impending confrontation are attributed to unnamed sources and should not be treated as a confirmed development.
Among the proposed measures are improved coordination between police and prosecutors, expedited hearings in cases involving women and children, and the submission of credible evidence of alleged judicial misconduct through appropriate legal channels.
The debate ultimately centres on ensuring that victims receive timely justice while preserving due process and judicial independence. The outcomes of both cases will depend on the evidence and decisions made through the legal system.
