Matthew Perry’s family watched the late actor’s on-screen wedding in the sitcom Friends with mixed emotions, his sister Mia Perry Bowick has recalled, saying they knew how much he wanted a partner and children but feared what his struggles with addiction might mean for his future.
Bowick discussed the scene in which Perry’s character, Chandler Bing, married Monica Geller, played by Courteney Cox, in the seventh-season finale of the hit sitcom in 2001.
“When we saw that wedding, we all knew that he had wanted that in life; he wanted a partner and he wanted children,” she said.
“We all knew how serious his disorder was, so there was this sense of, ‘Who knows what’s going to happen?’” she added.
Bowick’s comments feature in the run-up to the release of The One About Matthew Perry, a three-part Netflix documentary series due to premiere on October 27. The series explores the actor’s life, career and struggles with addiction.
Perry died in October 2023 at the age of 54 from the acute effects of ketamine, according to the medical examiner’s findings. He never married or had children.
He wrote about his struggles with alcohol and prescription drugs in his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.
Perry played Chandler throughout all 10 seasons of Friends, which ran from 1994 to 2004. The sitcom also starred Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe Buffay, Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green, David Schwimmer as Ross Geller and Matt LeBlanc as Joey Tribbiani.
