Miley Cyrus has opened up about experiencing an anxiety attack onstage following the death of her close friend Taylor Hawkins and a frightening incident in which her plane was forced to make an emergency landing.

Speaking with Zane Lowe, Cyrus said one thing that helped her feel comfortable performing again was realizing that she is often her own biggest critic.

“Nobody cares the way that I do,” the singer said.

Cyrus, 33, recalled experiencing an “actual anxiety attack on stage” while performing in Mexico.

“I was saying to the crowd, ‘I’m having an anxiety attack.’ And they were like, ‘Hell yeah, we’re having anxiety attacks,’” she recalled.

Looking back, Cyrus said the episode was the result of several overwhelming experiences building up at once.

“I guess it wasn’t so much anxiety, as I realize now in hindsight; it was just a buildup of the cocktail of chaos, you could say,” she explained.

Cyrus added that living through the COVID-19 pandemic was also part of the “cocktail of chaos” she experienced.

The Grammy winner also discussed the impact of Hawkins’ sudden death on March 25, 2022. The Foo Fighters drummer had been her neighbor, and the two became close during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cyrus said growing up on a 500-acre farm in Nashville meant she rarely had neighbors, which made it particularly special to be able to visit Hawkins easily and play music together.

She described the pair as being “so in alignment” musically.

Cyrus recalled that Hawkins died shortly after she traveled to Paraguay to perform at the Asunciónico music festival.

Her plane was forced to make an emergency landing after it was struck by lightning during a storm, preventing her from seeing Hawkins one last time.

Cyrus said Hawkins was the first person she called after the frightening flight, only to learn the following day that he had died.
