Pakistani actor Minal Khan has encouraged women to make time for their health and remain alert to possible signs of breast cancer.
Khan shared a picture on Instagram wearing a shirt featuring a pink ribbon, the widely recognised symbol of breast cancer awareness. She dedicated the message to women currently battling the disease, survivors whose experiences inspire others and those working to make their health a greater priority.
The actor reflected on her own attitude towards self-care, saying she once viewed taking time for herself as selfish. She said she now understands that looking after her health is an important form of self-love.
Khan urged her followers to take a few minutes to check themselves for possible warning signs of breast cancer. Changes in the size, shape or colour of the breast, as well as unusual lumps in the breast or armpit, can require medical attention.
October is observed as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, commonly known as Pinktober. The campaign encourages people to learn about the disease, support patients and survivors, and promote early detection.
Breast cancer remains a major health concern for women in Pakistan. Estimates from 2024 indicate that around one in eight women in the country may develop the disease during their lifetime. Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital estimates that about 83,000 women in Pakistan are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.
Health professionals commonly recommend monthly self-breast examinations to help women become familiar with the normal appearance and feel of their breasts. The process can take only a few minutes.
Women can begin by standing before a mirror and looking for unusual changes in breast size, shape, skin appearance or the nipples. They can then gently check the breasts and armpits for unusual lumps or other changes, both while standing and lying down.
A self-examination does not replace professional medical screening or diagnosis. Any unusual or persistent change should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.
