Monsoon’s final spell to bring rain across Punjab

LAHORE: Punjab is likely to receive the ninth and final spell of the monsoon season from Friday, with rain expected across several districts of the province from September 12 to 17, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

The PDMA spokesperson said the latest weather system could bring widespread rainfall to different parts of Punjab over the next several days. Authorities have advised relevant departments to remain prepared, particularly in areas that remain vulnerable to urban flooding, water accumulation and landslides.

Rain is forecast in Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang and Attock. Lahore, Sialkot, Sheikhupura, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Wazirabad, Hafizabad, Kasur, Okara and Nankana Sahib are also likely to receive showers during the spell.

The weather system is expected to affect central and southern parts of the province as well. Sargodha, Khushab, Noorpur Thal, Mianwali, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Layyah, Bhakkar, Sahiwal, Dera Ghazi Khan and Multan may experience rain during the period.

The PDMA has particularly highlighted the risk of landslides in Murree, the Galiyat region and other mountainous areas. Continuous or heavy rainfall in these locations could affect roads and disrupt travel, prompting authorities to maintain close monitoring of vulnerable routes.

PDMA Director General said Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala and Faisalabad face a risk of urban flooding during the latest monsoon spell. Heavy downpours over a short period could overwhelm drainage systems and cause water to accumulate on roads and in low-lying areas.

The authority has urged district administrations and relevant departments to take precautionary measures and remain alert throughout the rainy period. Residents, particularly those living in low-lying and flood-prone areas, have also been advised to exercise caution as the weather system develops.

The latest spell comes as the monsoon season moves towards its conclusion, with authorities keeping a close watch on rainfall intensity and its potential impact on urban and mountainous areas across Punjab.
