WASHINGTON: A new Associated Press-NORC survey has found widespread dissatisfaction among Americans with President Donald Trump’s policy toward Iran, with the issue emerging as a significant concern ahead of the November midterm elections.
According to the survey, 71% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of Iran, while 69% believe that going to war against Iran was not justified. The findings indicate that the conflict could remain a major foreign policy issue as voters prepare to elect members of Congress in November.
The survey also found growing concern over the economic impact of the conflict. Around 65% of Americans blamed Trump’s policies for the higher prices they are currently paying for goods and services. Rising fuel costs and increased prices of essential commodities have added to concerns about the broader economic consequences of the war.
The AP-NORC survey was conducted from September 24 to 28 among 2,140 US adults. It carries a margin of error of 2.9 percentage points.
The Associated Press reported that the Iran war has become an important foreign policy issue ahead of the midterm elections, while its economic consequences could also influence voters. Higher fuel prices and increased costs for everyday necessities have placed additional pressure on households already dealing with elevated living expenses.
The conflict has also triggered debate in Congress over the president’s authority to conduct military operations. Lawmakers have made several attempts to limit the president’s war powers and increase congressional oversight of military action against Iran.
In September, the House of Representatives passed a resolution aimed at stopping the war with Iran by a vote of 220-204. The vote highlighted divisions in Congress over the scope and duration of US military involvement.
The November elections could therefore have important implications for congressional oversight of the Iran conflict. If political control changes in either chamber of Congress, lawmakers could pursue further measures concerning presidential war powers, military operations and funding for the conflict.
With the election approaching, the survey results suggest that Americans’ views on the Iran war, its economic impact and the administration’s foreign policy could remain prominent issues in the national political debate.
