Netflix is bringing a new adaptation of Roald Dahl’s adult short stories to the screen, with a major cast of British and international actors attached to the upcoming drama.

According to a report published by Deadline on Wednesday, August 26, Nicola Coughlan, Imelda Staunton and Dominic West have joined the cast of the currently untitled series.

The six-part drama will draw inspiration from several short stories written by the late British author. The project is being developed as a contemporary interpretation of Dahl’s darker and more unusual tales.

The ensemble cast will also include Naomi Scott, Josh Finan, Toby Jones, Carmen Ejogo, Christine Tremarco, Michael Socha and Clarke Peters.

The series is being produced by Orchis Pictures, the production company founded by The Crown producer Suzanne Mackie.

Screenwriter Danny Brocklehurst, known for Fool Me Once, is writing the six-episode drama. He is also involved in the project’s creative development and has expressed his long-standing admiration for Dahl’s work.

Brocklehurst said Dahl’s stories had fascinated him since childhood. He described the author’s writing as captivating, dark and unpredictable, particularly praising the memorable characters created in his short stories.

The upcoming production will reportedly bring several of those characters into a modern setting while retaining the unsettling and twisted qualities associated with Dahl’s storytelling.

The official premise follows a young couple who become stranded in a fading seaside town. Their journey takes a dark turn as they encounter con artists, adulterers, murderous mothers and mysterious snake charmers.

The couple must find a way to escape the town before they become trapped in events that could determine their fate.

The series will be directed by Runyararo Mapfumo, known for Sex Education, and Ben Gregor, whose credits include The Magic Faraway Tree. Production is set to take place in Manchester.

The project marks another major screen adaptation connected to Dahl’s extensive literary catalogue. His stories have continued to attract filmmakers and streaming platforms because of their distinctive combination of dark humour, suspense, eccentric characters and unexpected twists.

Roald Dahl was a British author best known for his influential children’s books and short stories. His works have become internationally popular and have inspired numerous films, television productions and stage adaptations.

Among the qualities that made Dahl’s writing distinctive were his imaginative characters, unusual plots and ability to combine humour with darker themes.
