Global oil prices declined on Monday after US President Donald Trump said Russia and Ukraine had agreed to halt attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure, raising expectations of increased Russian oil supplies to international markets.
According to Reuters, Trump’s statement eased some concerns about potential disruptions to Russian energy exports and encouraged a decline in crude prices. However, oil continued to trade above $100 per barrel as the ongoing US-Israeli war against Iran kept geopolitical risks elevated and raised concerns about the stability of global energy supplies.
Brent crude futures fell by $1.37, or 1.31%, to $103.35 per barrel. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude also declined by $1.30, or 1.42%, to $90.55 per barrel.
Market sentiment improved amid expectations that a reduction in attacks on Russian energy facilities could help maintain or increase the flow of Russian crude to international buyers. Any improvement in the availability of Russian oil could ease supply pressures and limit further price increases.
Nevertheless, uncertainty surrounding the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran continued to support prices. Traders remained concerned that further escalation could threaten oil production, transportation routes and other critical energy infrastructure across the region.
The contrasting developments left oil markets balancing the prospect of additional Russian supplies against the risk of further disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict.
Analysts and traders are likely to continue monitoring developments in both conflicts, along with changes in crude exports and shipping activity, to assess the direction of prices. While expectations of improved Russian supplies have put downward pressure on the market, sustained geopolitical tensions could keep crude prices elevated in the coming sessions.
