Oil tanker hit by unknown projectile off Oman, crew safe

MUSCAT: An oil tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile off the coast of Oman, damaging its engine room and leaving the vessel disabled, in the latest security incident to raise concerns over commercial shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said it received a report from the tanker’s master after the vessel was hit about nine nautical miles northeast of Ash Shishah, Oman. The impact damaged the engine room and left the tanker unable to continue under its own power.

All crew members aboard the vessel were reported safe, and there were no immediate reports of casualties. However, UKMTO said the environmental impact of the incident was not known at the time of its initial report.
