AMSTELVEEN: Pakistan assistant coach Adnan Zaker believes the Green Shirts can rise to the occasion and stun arch-rivals India in their crucial FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup encounter on Wednesday, with the high-profile clash carrying major implications for both teams.
Pakistan and India will meet at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen on August 19 in a Pool D fixture that could determine who advances to the next stage of the tournament. The match is scheduled to be played at the venue where all Pool D matches are taking place.
Zaker acknowledged that India currently benefits from greater investment and a larger support structure in hockey, but insisted that those advantages would not decide the outcome on the pitch.
He said Pakistan could play without the burden of expectation and put the pressure on India, describing the contest as an evenly balanced opportunity for his side.
The assistant coach also pointed to India’s extensive coaching setup, highlighting the resources available to their neighbours. Despite that disparity, he maintained that Pakistan have enough quality to compete and create a major upset.
Pakistan captain Abu Bakar Mahmood is equally determined to turn previous disappointments into motivation. The two teams have already met twice in the Pro League, and the captain said Pakistan would study those encounters and correct the mistakes that cost them.
The recent meetings have given India an edge, including a 7-1 victory in the Pro League in June, making Pakistan’s task even more challenging.
However, Pakistan forward Rana Waheed believes the team can respond strongly after a frustrating 3-3 draw against Wales in their previous World Cup match.
Waheed admitted Pakistan should have secured victory against Wales but said the result had not damaged the players’ belief. He backed the Green Shirts to produce a much-improved display against India.
Head coach Bob Johan Vald-Felt also recognised the strength of the Indian side but stressed the significance of the opportunity. A victory would not only revive Pakistan’s qualification hopes but could become one of the biggest results of their campaign.
Pakistan opened the tournament with a 4-1 defeat against England before being held to a 3-3 draw by Wales. India, meanwhile, suffered a 4-2 defeat against England in their second Pool D game, leaving both sides under pressure heading into the rivalry clash.
For Pakistan, the equation is straightforward: a strong result is essential to keep their World Cup journey alive.
And with history, pressure and qualification hopes all converging at Wagener Stadium, Wednesday’s India-Pakistan encounter promises far more than a routine pool match. It is a chance for Pakistan to silence the doubts, rewrite recent results and deliver a memorable World Cup upset.
