According to the report, Indian authorities demolished a 70-year-old mosque in Saharanpur, a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The demolition reportedly took place on September 5 in the presence of a heavy police contingent.

The authorities had reportedly directed local residents to have the mosque sealed before carrying out the demolition operation. The incident has drawn a strong reaction from Pakistan which has expressed concern over the treatment of Muslim religious sites in India.

A spokesperson for Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the demolition of the historic mosque in Saharanpur as a condemnable act. The spokesperson also referred to the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992 describing it as a symbol of religious intolerance, prejudice and hatred.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office urged the international community to take immediate notice of what it called the systematic exploitation and mistreatment of Muslims by Indian authorities.

The Foreign Office further called for an end to the alleged desecration and demolition of Muslim places of worship in India. It stressed that religious sites should be protected and that communities should be allowed to practice their faith without fear or discrimination.

The latest development has once again brought attention to concerns surrounding the protection of Muslim religious and historical sites in India. The demolition has also prompted renewed discussion about religious freedom, minority rights and the preservation of historic places of worship.
