A major development has taken place in Pakistan’s dental education sector as the duration of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program has officially been increased from four years to five years.
Under the new decision, a five-year BDS program will be implemented in all dental colleges across Pakistan starting from the 2025–26 academic session.
The University of Health Sciences (UHS) has formally issued a notification regarding the change. The new curriculum has been developed in accordance with the standards set by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC).
The integrated five-year BDS curriculum places greater emphasis on clinical training, simulation laboratories, practical skills and research to ensure that students receive education aligned with modern international standards.
According to the official notification, the primary objective of this reform is to improve the global recognition of Pakistani dental degrees and provide graduates with better opportunities for employment and higher education abroad.
In addition, authorities are considering introducing a bridging program or top-up year for graduates who have already completed the previous four-year BDS program enabling them to obtain an equivalent five-year qualification.
According to Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Ahsan Waheed Rathore, the five-year BDS program will better prepare students for international dental licensing examinations.
He added that aligning Pakistan’s dental education with global standards is the need of the hour and emphasized that this change is not merely an additional academic year but a fundamental reform in dental education.
