A tragic incident occurred at Karachi’s Sandspit Beach on Sunday when two young men lost their lives after drowning while swimming in the sea near Hut No. 15 on Manora Road. The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of entering the sea despite warnings about strong currents and unsafe swimming conditions.
According to police officials, four friends from Karachi’s Pak Colony had visited Sandspit for a picnic. During their outing, all four entered the water to swim. However, they were caught in strong sea currents, leaving them struggling to return to shore.
Officials said that two of the friends managed to make it back safely, while the remaining two were swept away by the waves. Rescue volunteers from the Edhi Foundation launched an operation and recovered the bodies from the sea. The deceased were later shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi to complete legal formalities.
The victims were identified as 18-year-old Saif Qureshi, son of Anwar Qureshi, and 27-year-old Zubair Gul, son of Mahmood Gul. Police confirmed that both young men were close friends and residents of Hasrat Mohani Colony in Pak Colony.
Duty Officer Zulqarnain of the Mauripur Police Station stated that the group had traveled to Sandspit for recreation when the unfortunate incident occurred. Following the completion of medico-legal procedures, the bodies were handed over to the victims’ families for burial.
The incident has renewed concerns about public safety at Karachi’s beaches, particularly during weekends and holidays when large numbers of visitors gather along the coastline. Rescue officials and local authorities frequently advise the public to avoid swimming when sea conditions are dangerous, especially during periods of high tides and strong currents.
Authorities continue to urge families and young visitors to follow safety instructions, obey warning signs, and avoid entering deep water without trained lifeguards present. Beachgoers are also encouraged to remain within designated safe areas and immediately seek help if someone is caught in strong waves.
Every year, several drowning incidents are reported at Karachi’s beaches due to rough sea conditions and a lack of adherence to safety advisories. Officials hope that increased public awareness and stricter enforcement of safety measures will help prevent similar tragedies in the future and protect visitors enjoying the city’s coastline.
