Pakistan face Hong Kong in Asian Games cricket quarter-final

NAGOYA: The knockout stage of the men’s cricket competition at the Asian Games has taken shape, with Pakistan set to face Hong Kong in the quarter-finals as the tournament moves into its decisive phase.

Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka entered the quarter-finals directly as the competition’s top-seeded teams. The remaining four spots were decided through the group stage, where Afghanistan, Nepal, Malaysia and Hong Kong secured qualification.

Pakistan will take on Hong Kong on September 28, with the match opening the quarter-final schedule. Later the same day, India will meet Afghanistan in another highly anticipated knockout contest.

The remaining two quarter-finals will be played on September 29. Nepal face Sri Lanka, while Bangladesh take on Malaysia for places in the last four.

However, the tournament’s knockout stage could be influenced by weather after rain disrupted several group matches.

Japan’s final Group A fixture against Nepal could not be completed because of rain, while the Group B match between Malaysia and Oman was abandoned without a ball being bowled. The washouts affected the final group standings and ended the campaigns of both Japan and Oman.

With more rain forecast for Monday and Tuesday, organisers and teams could face another challenge during the quarter-finals. Any significant interruptions could affect the momentum of teams and complicate the schedule as the competition moves toward the medal rounds.

The weather outlook is expected to improve later in the tournament. Conditions are forecast to be more favourable for cricket on Thursday, when the semi-finals are scheduled, and on Saturday, when the medal matches are due to take place.

Pakistan will enter their quarter-final looking to build on their Asian Games campaign and secure a place in the semi-finals. Hong Kong, meanwhile, will aim to produce a strong performance against one of the competition’s seeded sides.

India arrive in the knockout stage as the defending champions. At the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, India won the men’s cricket gold medal after defeating Afghanistan in the final.

Bangladesh claimed bronze in Hangzhou after defeating Pakistan in the third-place playoff.

With the quarter-final line-up now confirmed, attention turns to September 28, when Pakistan and Hong Kong will begin the knockout battle for a place in the Asian Games semi-finals.
