Pakistan Hockey championship prize money jumps 10-fold

LAHORE: Pakistan’s national hockey championship is set for a major financial boost, with the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) announcing a Rs280 million prize pool, marking a tenfold increase from previous rewards.

The move is being seen as an effort to recognise players’ performances and encourage greater competition at the domestic level as Pakistan looks to rebuild its hockey programme.

Under the new arrangement, players participating in the championship will receive prize money running into millions of rupees. The significant increase represents a major departure from the previous system, under which players generally received daily allowances and accommodation rather than substantial financial rewards.

The PHF is hoping that the enhanced incentives will motivate players to perform at their best and provide a stronger platform for identifying talent for Pakistan’s national teams.

The upcoming competitions will feature senior, junior and Under-15 categories, giving players from different age groups an opportunity to showcase their skills and compete at the national level.

The championships are scheduled to be held in January, with the federation expected to finalise further details regarding venues, participating teams and the distribution of prize money.

The decision comes at a time when Pakistan hockey is seeking a revival after years of inconsistent performances and administrative challenges.

For young players in particular, the new financial incentives could provide an added reason to pursue the sport seriously.

The PHF hopes the initiative will not only make the national championship more competitive but also help create a stronger pipeline of players capable of representing Pakistan internationally.

If successfully implemented, the Rs280m prize pool could mark an important step towards making domestic hockey more attractive and rewarding for Pakistan’s next generation of players.
