Pakistan is set to implement a new mechanism for determining the prices of petroleum products, with the revised system taking effect from tonight. According to sources in the Petroleum Division, the government has introduced a new pricing formula under which the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) will calculate fuel prices based on the average international market prices recorded over the previous seven days.
Under this new mechanism, the prices announced by OGRA will become effective from the same night they are issued. The move marks a significant shift from the previous pricing system, under which petroleum prices were revised every fifteen days. The government believes that the daily pricing model will ensure that domestic fuel prices more accurately reflect changes in global oil markets.
Sources stated that OGRA will use a seven-day average of international petroleum prices to determine the daily retail prices of petroleum products. This approach is intended to reduce the impact of sudden fluctuations in global oil prices while ensuring that consumers benefit more quickly from decreases in international fuel prices. Likewise, any increase in global prices will also be reflected in the domestic market without long delays.
Earlier, the federal government had announced its decision to revise petroleum prices on a daily basis instead of following the existing fortnightly schedule. The announcement was made during a joint press conference by Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik and Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar.
Speaking at the press conference, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the federal cabinet had approved the new policy after careful consideration. He explained that OGRA would now be responsible for determining fuel prices every day in accordance with international market trends.
The minister further stated that OGRA would publish the updated petroleum prices on its official website daily, allowing consumers, businesses, and stakeholders to access the latest information easily. He emphasized that the new pricing mechanism is designed to enhance transparency and ensure that fuel prices remain aligned with developments in the global energy market.
Ali Pervaiz Malik noted that under the daily pricing system, any increase or decrease in international oil prices would be passed on directly to consumers. This means that if global fuel prices fall, Pakistani consumers will benefit sooner through lower domestic prices. Conversely, if international prices rise, the increase will also be reflected promptly in local fuel rates.
The government believes that the new policy will make the pricing process more transparent, efficient, and responsive to global market conditions. Officials also expect that the daily adjustment mechanism will reduce uncertainty and provide a more accurate reflection of international petroleum price movements.
The introduction of daily fuel pricing represents one of the most significant changes to Pakistan’s petroleum pricing framework in recent years. By linking domestic fuel prices more closely with international market trends through a seven-day average formula, the government aims to create a fairer and more predictable system for both consumers and the petroleum industry while ensuring greater transparency in the country’s fuel pricing mechanism.
