Pakistan are preparing for a fresh start in Test cricket as they gear up for a two-match home series against Sri Lanka, beginning November 9 in Rawalpindi.
Head coach Mike Hesson has directed ground staff to prepare pace-friendly pitches for both matches, aiming to strengthen the team’s performance on fast-bowling surfaces. The second Test is scheduled to begin in Lahore on November 17.
The team management is also considering major changes following Pakistan’s disappointing Test campaign in 2026, during which they suffered six defeats in seven matches. Five players from the XI that featured in the final Test against England, including Saim Ayub, Abdullah Shafique, Shan Masood, Mohammad Imran and Mohammad Ali, are reportedly no longer part of the team’s plans.
Young batters Azan Awais and Abdullah Fazal have emerged as leading candidates for the opening positions, signalling a possible change in Pakistan’s batting combination.
Meanwhile, Babar Azam is featuring in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy after being advised to play domestic four-day cricket to regain his batting rhythm and confidence.
Fast bowlers Mohammad Abbas and Razaullah are also expected to join the national squad following the three-day match against Sri Lanka.
Pakistan currently sit ninth in the ICC Test rankings and occupy the same position in the World Test Championship standings. The team management hopes that introducing younger players, preparing more challenging home pitches and adopting a more aggressive approach will help restore the side’s competitiveness in the next championship cycle.
