The federal government has increased petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) prices in Pakistan raising the cost of petrol by Rs1.54 per litre and diesel by Rs2.16 per litre. The revised rates will take effect from Tuesday, October 27 according to a notification issued by the Petroleum Division.
The government continues to collect Rs114 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs100 per litre on diesel, adding to the overall cost paid by consumers.
The latest increase comes amid fluctuations in international oil markets linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Fuel prices in Pakistan have experienced significant changes in recent months as global energy costs and supply concerns have affected domestic rates.
High-speed diesel previously reached a peak of Rs520.35 per litre on April 3 after climbing from Rs281 per litre following the outbreak of the US-Iran war on February 28. Petrol also peaked at Rs458.41 per litre on April 3, having risen from Rs266 in the first week of March.
Meanwhile, the government has revived austerity measures in response to rising fuel costs. Under the measures, markets must close by 9pm while fuel allocations for official vehicles have been reduced by 50 per cent for three months.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had also announced a relief scheme on September 13 for motorcycle users, rickshaw operators and owners of vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc to help ease the impact of higher international oil prices.
In July, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced a shift towards daily fuel price adjustments because of volatility in global markets. The government assigned the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) responsibility for determining prices based on international trends.
Petrol and diesel are among Pakistan’s most widely consumed petroleum products. Petrol price changes directly affect private motorists, motorcyclists and rickshaw users while diesel costs influence freight transport power generation and other economic activities. Consequently fuel price increases can place additional pressure on household budgets and business operating costs.
