Paraglider Asif Mahmood dies in Chitral accident

CHITRAL: Paraglider and renowned diver Asif Mahmood has died in a paragliding accident in Chitral, with his family confirming his death.

According to family members, Mahmood was paragliding in Buni when he met with an accident on Thursday. The incident occurred in a mountainous area that was difficult to access, making rescue and recovery operations challenging.

Police sources said the accident took place amid poor weather conditions in the mountainous region. The difficult terrain and adverse weather hampered efforts to locate Mahmood after the incident.

A search operation for Mahmood continued from the day of the accident as rescue teams and local authorities worked to locate him in the remote area.

His body was recovered on Friday after an extended search, police sources confirmed. The recovery brought an end to the search operation, while further procedures are expected to be carried out according to local authorities.

Mahmood was known for his involvement in adventure sports, particularly paragliding and diving. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief among family members and those familiar with his work in the adventure sports community.

The incident has also highlighted the risks associated with adventure activities in mountainous areas, particularly when weather conditions deteriorate suddenly.

Police sources said Mahmood originally belonged to Suraj Gali in the Khanpur area. His family has confirmed his death, while details surrounding the accident are being gathered.

Authorities are expected to complete the necessary formalities before the deceased is handed over to his family for burial.
