Director Penelope Spheeris has recalled an uncomfortable incident involving an alleged gift she received while working on the 2011 anthology film Five, claiming that it was intended to embarrass her in front of the production crew. However, a source close to Jennifer Aniston has said the actress has no recollection of giving such a present.
Spheeris, 80, discussed the incident during an appearance on The Moynihan Report. She said a producer handed her a gift box after a day of filming, with several crew members gathered around her. According to the director, the box contained a sex toy decorated with rhinestones.
Spheeris described the gift as an attempt to humiliate her publicly. She also joked about its appearance, saying the decorative stones made the item impractical to use.
Although Aniston did not personally hand over the box, Spheeris said she suspected the actress was behind the gesture. She recalled attending the Directors Guild Awards with Aniston later and noticing that the actress was carrying a similar gift box.
According to Spheeris, she asked Aniston whether the box contained another similar item. The director said Aniston responded that the present was intended for Marta Kauffman, co-creator of the popular sitcom Friends.
Spheeris acknowledged the sensitivity of making the allegation but maintained her account during the interview.
A source close to Aniston, speaking to the Daily Mail, disputed the suggestion that the actress had given the gift. The source said Aniston had no recollection of ever presenting Spheeris with such an item and questioned why she would have sent it without an accompanying card.
The alleged incident dates back to the production of Five, a collection of short films exploring the impact of breast cancer. Spheeris and Aniston each directed a segment of the project, alongside Demi Moore, Alicia Keys and Patty Jenkins.
The directors were subsequently nominated at the Directors Guild Awards for their work on the anthology.
Neither account independently establishes who sent the gift or the intention behind it. The incident has resurfaced through Spheeris’s recent comments, bringing renewed attention to her recollection and the response from Aniston’s camp.
