ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) has clarified that the recognition of medical and dental colleges, as well as the allocation of seats, is carried out strictly under the applicable legal and regulatory framework and prescribed standards.
The Council said it had approved 1,400 additional seats in public-sector medical and dental colleges across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Islamabad Capital Territory and Punjab, keeping in view the national need to expand opportunities for meritorious students.
According to the PM&DC, the initiative is aimed at improving access to medical education, particularly for students from underprivileged and underserved regions. It also seeks to reduce the need for deserving Pakistani students to travel abroad in pursuit of medical education.
The Council said it remained committed to facilitating students by promoting access to affordable and quality medical and dental education within the country. The objective, it added, was to enable students to complete their professional education in Pakistan rather than seeking opportunities overseas.
The PM&DC also rejected the impression that private-sector medical colleges had been allowed more seats than public-sector institutions.
It clarified that the same regulatory standards are applied to both public and private medical and dental colleges, regardless of their ownership or administrative status.
These standards are designed to ensure that institutions provide quality education, adequate academic and clinical facilities, and appropriate measures for patient safety.
The Council reiterated that its efforts to facilitate students would continue to remain aligned with its regulatory responsibility to maintain the quality and standards of medical and dental education across Pakistan.
The PM&DC said expanding educational opportunities would therefore continue alongside regulatory oversight to ensure that increased access does not compromise the quality of professional medical training.
