Punjab orders swift fire safety compliance across Public Hospitals

LAHORE: The Punjab Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Department has directed all public-sector medical universities, colleges, specialized healthcare institutions and teaching hospitals to immediately strengthen electrical and fire safety arrangements.

In a letter issued on August 26, the department stressed that strict implementation was essential given the presence of vulnerable and critically ill patients in healthcare facilities. It reiterated that protecting lives, preventing damage to hospital infrastructure and ensuring uninterrupted medical services must remain the foremost priorities.

Hospital administrations have been instructed to obtain updated electrical load assessment certificates from the competent building authorities to ensure that existing sanctioned capacity is sufficient for present and anticipated requirements. They have also been directed to ensure that fire hydrants, extinguishers and other firefighting equipment are readily accessible and fully operational.

The department further ordered regular inspection and servicing of fire extinguishers, along with proper documentation of refilling, replacement and maintenance activities. Hospital staff are also required to receive regular fire safety training in coordination with Rescue 1122.

Heads of all concerned institutions have been given 24 hours to submit verified compliance reports confirming implementation of the directives. The matter has been declared “TOP PRIORITY” by the department.

Copies of the directive have also been sent to senior provincial authorities, including the Minister for Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education, Chief Secretary Punjab, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister and Chief Executive Officer of the Punjab Healthcare Commission.

The measures are aimed at reducing fire and electrical risks in public hospitals, protecting patients and healthcare workers, and ensuring that essential medical services remain operational during emergencies.
