The Punjab government has announced plans to expand its Liquid Tree project to promote cleaner air and sustainable environmental solutions across the province.
The initiative, managed by the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), uses microalgae-based technology to absorb carbon dioxide and improve air quality in urban areas where planting conventional trees is difficult.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said Pakistan’s first EPA-certified liquid tree will be relocated from Faisalabad to Lahore as part of the expansion. She added that researchers have collected more than 100 species of microalgae from different regions, ranging from Karachi to Khyber, to support the project.
During the first phase, authorities will install liquid trees in major shopping malls and various indoor and outdoor public spaces to help tackle urban air pollution.
According to the chief minister, the project offers a modern scientific approach to reducing carbon emissions and smog, and could contribute significantly to improving environmental conditions in cities.
