A rare and unusual apple on display at a fruit and vegetable store in Christchurch, New Zealand has attracted crowds of curious visitors because it is half red and half yellow.
According to reports, the apple is divided almost perfectly down the middle into two distinct colours. It was discovered in mid-May among a shipment of high-quality red apples that were juicy, sweet, crisp and flavourful. The shipment arrived at Sunshine Corner Market located in the suburb of Marshland near Christchurch.
Experts believe this rare type of apple occurs in fewer than one out of every million fruits. The unusual appearance is caused by a genetic mutation which results in the apple developing from cells that have two different genetic backgrounds. Speaking to local media, the store owner, Heather said the apple has become something of a local celebrity.
She explained that people come to see the apple, go home and tell their spouses about it but are often not believed. As a result, they return with family members to show them the remarkable fruit in person. Many visitors have become excited upon seeing it and have taken photographs.
Heather said it was the first two-colored apple she had ever seen. Despite spending many years in the produce business, she had never encountered anything like it before. She added that some customers have even asked to touch the apple for good luck before participating in competitions or important events.
According to Heather, storing the apple in a refrigerator has helped extend its shelf life. However, a decision will soon have to be made about whether it can be preserved permanently or whether it should be cut open to see what it looks like on the inside.
The unusual apple continues to attract attention and has become a popular attraction among local residents and visitors alike.
