Punjab to install vehicle emission scanners

The Punjab government has decided to introduce advanced technology to monitor vehicles emitting excessive smoke as part of efforts to control air pollution in the province.

According to a spokesperson for the Punjab Environment and Climate Change Department, an emission scanning system will be installed at nine major entry and exit points of Lahore.

The system will use modern remote-sensing devices to measure pollutants released from vehicles without requiring them to stop. The technology is designed to allow authorities to monitor vehicle emissions more efficiently while traffic continues to move.

The scanning system will also record important details of each vehicle, including its registration number, speed, acceleration and the time at which the emissions are measured. This data is expected to help authorities identify vehicles that exceed permitted emission levels.

The secretary of environment said the use of modern technology would make enforcement against environmental pollution more effective. The system is intended to provide authorities with a faster and more systematic way of identifying vehicles contributing to poor air quality.

Officials said the Vehicle Emission Scanning System is being developed under the Lahore Air Improvement Framework. The initiative is part of wider efforts to improve air quality in Lahore, where vehicular emissions are considered an important source of urban air pollution.

The introduction of remote emission monitoring is expected to reduce the need for manual roadside checks and enable authorities to collect more detailed information about vehicle pollution. The data gathered through the system could also support future enforcement and air-quality management measures in the city.
