Raphinha, Lopez brace as Barcelona crush Elche 5-0

ELCHE: Barcelona opened their La Liga title defence in emphatic fashion on Sunday, sweeping aside Elche 5-0 at the Martinez Valero as Raphinha and Fermin Lopez scored twice each in a dominant display.

The Spanish champions wasted little time setting the tone for the new campaign. Raphinha, operating as a central striker following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Victor Chust brought him down inside the box.

The Brazil international calmly converted after 14 minutes, giving Hansi Flick’s side an early advantage and putting Elche under immediate pressure.

Barcelona had several regular starters on the bench as players continued to regain full fitness following the World Cup, but the visitors’ depth proved more than enough. Teenage winger Lamine Yamal started on the right but struggled to influence the game, while Barcelona’s midfield and attack continued to create problems for the hosts.

Raphinha remained at the heart of the attacking threat and turned provider before half-time. The Brazilian unselfishly set up debutant Karim Adeyemi, who found the net to double Barcelona’s lead.

Adeyemi, deployed on the left wing, initially looked uncertain but gradually grew into the contest. His pace and movement added another dimension to Barcelona’s attack and helped stretch an increasingly vulnerable Elche defence.

Barcelona returned after the break with even greater confidence. Substitute Anthony Gordon, making his debut, quickly made an impact by providing two assists in an impressive cameo.

Gordon first teed up Raphinha for his second goal, extending Barcelona’s advantage to 3-0. The former Newcastle United winger then supplied Lopez, who finished confidently to make it four.

Lopez completed his brace later in the match after youngster Xavi Espart played him through, putting the result beyond any doubt and completing a five-goal rout.

While Barcelona’s attack sparkled, Flick’s high defensive line occasionally showed signs of vulnerability. Elche created opportunities during the match, but goalkeeper Joan Garcia responded well whenever called upon to preserve Barcelona’s clean sheet.

The result sends an early warning to Real Madrid and the rest of La Liga. After watching Jose Mourinho’s Madrid edge Espanyol 2-1 on Saturday, Barcelona’s commanding victory suggested the defending champions remain determined to retain their crown.

Raphinha’s performance was particularly encouraging after his move into the number nine role. Barcelona are still searching for a long-term striker, having seen Atletico Madrid reject their bid for Julian Alvarez.

Asked whether the club needs another striker, Raphinha left the decision to the president, insisting he is comfortable playing anywhere across the attack.

For Flick, however, the message from the opening weekend was already clear: Barcelona’s title defence has begun with a statement.
