Rawal Dam spillways opened as water level rises after heavy rain

ISLAMABAD: The district administration has opened the spillways of Rawal Dam after heavy rainfall in Islamabad and surrounding areas caused a significant rise in the water level.

According to the Islamabad district administration, the water level in Rawal Dam has crossed 1,751 feet.

The spillways were opened at around 2:30pm on Wednesday to manage the rising water level and reduce pressure on the reservoir.

Rescue 1122, police and other relevant departments were placed on alert before the spillways were opened. The authorities directed all concerned agencies to remain vigilant and closely monitor the situation.

The administration also instructed the relevant departments to take all necessary precautionary measures ahead of the release of water.

Officials have urged residents living near streams, nullahs and other low-lying areas to remain cautious. Citizens have specifically been advised to avoid going near waterways and vulnerable areas during the spillway operation.

The warning comes as continued rainfall in Islamabad and nearby areas has increased the flow of water into Rawal Dam.

Authorities said emergency and rescue agencies would continue monitoring the situation and respond if required.

Residents have been advised to follow official instructions and avoid unnecessary movement near water channels until conditions improve.

The opening of the spillways is aimed at safely managing the increased water level and preventing any potential threat to nearby areas.
