The Rolling Stones have returned to the studio to record new music, saxophonist Courtney Pine has revealed, just three months after the veteran British rock band released their 25th studio album, “Foreign Tongues”.
Pine, who previously worked with frontman Mick Jagger, said he had recorded with the singer a couple of weeks ago. He made the remarks in an interview for BBC Radio 3’s “Private Passions”, scheduled to air on Sunday.
“I’ve just done another session a couple of weeks ago with him [Jagger] for The Rolling Stones,” Pine said.
“Mick’s an amazing artist,” he added. “That whole pop world is completely different to anything that I know.”
Pine previously played saxophone on Jagger’s 1993 solo album, “Wandering Spirit”. Recalling the experience, he said he had been asked to travel to Los Angeles at short notice to record a new version of the album.
“I played on one version of Mick Jagger’s solo album and they threw it away and then I get a call, ‘Can I come out to LA tomorrow and play on another version of the same album?’ Mick Jagger? Of course!” Pine said.
Jagger has also indicated that more songs could follow “Foreign Tongues”, saying he had already started writing material. He said some songs might be better suited to other artists, including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, rather than the Stones.
“I’m very open-minded to it. I’ve got a lot of stuff, and not all of it’s suitable for The Rolling Stones. It shouldn’t stop me writing them, you know. If you get an idea, just write it,” Jagger said.
Earlier this year, guitarist Keith Richards said Jagger “won’t bloody stop” making music, adding that the creative momentum behind “Foreign Tongues” had encouraged the band to keep working.
Released on July 10, “Foreign Tongues” became the Rolling Stones’ 15th UK number-one album, drawing the band level with The Beatles for the most chart-topping albums by an act in the UK.
The band have not announced a new album. A spokesperson has said they are continually developing ideas and recording tracks that could be released in the future.
