Seward, speaking on Hello! magazine’s live episode of “A Right Royal Podcast”, said Charles had loved Diana and felt guilty that he could not make their marriage work.

“He did love her,” Seward said. “He may not have loved her in the very beginning, and he may not have loved her by the end, but he felt so bad that he couldn’t make the marriage work.”

Seward said Charles “was plagued by guilt because he knew he was the one who should have made it work”, but added that Diana’s “intense jealousy and many, many other things” meant the couple were “just not suited at the time”.

Seward also said Diana had told her that she still loved Charles and believed they might have had a successful marriage if they had met when they were older.

“She actually told me that she really loved Charles. He was the one she would always love,” Seward said.

Seward said Diana had also told her that she believed the couple “probably would have made it work and conquered the world” if they had met later in life.

Diana married Charles in 1981 and they divorced in 1996. She died in a car crash in Paris in August 1997, aged 36.

Seward said she had seen Diana shortly before her death and that the princess had described Charles as “the one that got away”. She also recalled Diana saying it was important that her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, knew that their father had loved her.
