ISLAMABAD: Barrister Salman Safdar met Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, at Adiala Jail on Monday after repeated requests for access to the incarcerated couple.
Safdar confirmed the meeting in a post on social media platform X, saying it took place at 4:30pm and lasted around 40 minutes. He described it as his first meeting with Imran in seven months and with Bushra Bibi in 11 months.
The lawyer said the limited duration of the meeting was insufficient to discuss all pending cases and legal matters involving the couple. He added that both Imran and Bushra briefed him on their health and the conditions inside the prison.
According to Safdar, the PTI founder and his wife also shared fresh instructions concerning their ongoing legal proceedings and certain other matters. However, he did not disclose details of the discussions.
The meeting comes amid continued legal efforts to secure access to the couple. On September 2, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) directed Adiala Jail authorities to ensure meaningful human interaction, family visits, exercise facilities, reading material and other basic provisions for Imran and Bushra.
The court observed that lawful imprisonment did not justify unnecessary restrictions that could undermine the dignity of inmates.
Earlier, on June 18, the IHC had directed the Islamabad advocate general to arrange a meeting between the couple and their legal counsel within seven days. The purpose was to facilitate legal formalities and pursue appeals against their convictions in the £190 million reference.
Safdar’s previous meeting with Imran took place on April 9, when he visited the former prime minister for legal consultations in the same case. That meeting lasted approximately 60 minutes and was arranged following another IHC order issued on April 8.
Imran and Bushra remain imprisoned at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail. The couple received 17-year prison sentences on December 20, 2025, in the Toshakhana-II case involving a Bulgari jewellery set allegedly retained unlawfully after being gifted by the Saudi crown prince.
