Saudi Arabia launches first food database

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has launched the Kingdom’s first Food Composition Database offering reliable nutritional information about local foods and traditional dishes commonly consumed across Saudi Arabia.

According to Arab media reports the database was developed with the National Nutrition Committee under the Health Sector Transformation Program.  It is based on approved scientific methods and quality standards.

The database will serve as a national reference for nutrition health and research. It provides detailed information about the energy carbohydrates proteins fats vitamins and minerals found in different foods.

The new system aims to support better food and nutrition policies scientific research and health studies. It will also help raise public awareness about healthy eating and nutrition.
