The Supreme Court has issued its written order regarding the transfer of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan from jail to Shifa International Hospital for medical treatment.
In its order, the court emphasized that imprisonment does not deprive a person of the right to humane treatment and necessary medical care. The court said an incarcerated individual must be provided with appropriate healthcare facilities according to medical requirements.
The Supreme Court directed that a medical board be established at Shifa International Hospital to examine and treat Imran Khan.
The board will include specialists from several medical fields. The court ordered that a physician, general surgeon, internal medicine specialist, eye specialist and cardiologist be included in the medical team.
The court also permitted Dr Faisal Sultan and Dr Uzma Khan to remain involved in Imran Khan’s medical treatment. Their participation will form part of the arrangements for his medical assessment and care.
According to the written order, the expenses related to Imran Khan’s treatment will be borne by him or his family.
The Supreme Court also imposed restrictions on the disclosure of information concerning his health. Medical details will not be shared with the media or the general public.
The court further directed that no public gathering should take place outside the hospital during Imran Khan’s stay. The restrictions are aimed at ensuring that the medical treatment process is not affected by political or public activity.
The court also made it clear that information about Imran Khan’s health must not be used for political purposes.
It warned that any violation of the court’s directions could lead to the immediate withdrawal of the facilities granted to the PTI founder.
The written order also addresses Imran Khan’s contact with his family. The Supreme Court directed that he be allowed one meeting with his family every week.
In addition, the court ordered that Imran Khan be permitted to speak with his sons by telephone twice a week.
The order provides a formal framework for Imran Khan’s medical treatment and family communication while he remains in custody. It also sets out specific conditions for his hospital stay and places restrictions on the public disclosure and political use of his medical information.
