SCCI hosts Energy Ministry briefing on proposed 400MW electricity auction

SIALKOT: President of the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), Syed Ahtesham Mazhar, attended a briefing session organized by the Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO), an entity operating under the Ministry of Energy (Power Division), at the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The session focused on the proposed auction of 400 megawatts (MW) of electricity, a significant initiative aimed at facilitating wheeling arrangements between power generation companies and bulk power consumers. The briefing brought together members of the business community, industrial stakeholders, and energy sector representatives to discuss the potential benefits and implications of the proposed framework.

During the session, ISMO officials provided a detailed overview of the planned electricity auction and explained how the wheeling mechanism would enable large-scale consumers to purchase electricity directly from power producers through the national transmission network. The initiative is expected to enhance competition in the power sector, improve energy efficiency, and provide industries with greater flexibility in meeting their electricity requirements.

Participants were informed about the regulatory framework, operational procedures, and commercial aspects of the proposed auction. Discussions also covered the potential impact of wheeling arrangements on industrial productivity, energy costs, and the overall competitiveness of Pakistan’s export-oriented sectors.

Speaking on the occasion, Syed Ahtesham Mazhar appreciated the Ministry of Energy’s efforts to engage with the business community on important energy sector reforms. He emphasized the need for affordable, reliable, and uninterrupted power supply to support industrial growth and strengthen Pakistan’s export performance.

The participants welcomed the opportunity to gain insights into the proposed initiative and exchanged views on the challenges and opportunities associated with direct power procurement.
