It sits inside a former gold mine in the Black Hills region. The work may involve a theoretical particle known as a WIMP.
Ordinary matter forms stars, planets, and everything visible to us. Yet it makes up only around 15% of all matter in the universe. The remainder is believed to be dark matter, invisible and undetectable directly. It emits no light and cannot be seen through telescopes. Physicist Sam Eriksen, the study’s lead author, called this the first real hint. He described it as an early sign of a possible dark matter observation.
Researchers are searching for dark matter colliding with xenon atoms. Such collisions can produce brief flashes of light inside the detector. The properties of these flashes hint at what kind of particle caused them. Even so, scientists still don’t fully understand dark matter’s true nature. Uncertainty also remains around the related mystery of dark energy.
Co-author Alvine Kamaha explained the reasoning behind the search further. She said galaxies and galaxy clusters behave as if they hold extra mass. Scientists can’t see dark matter directly, but they can observe its gravitational effects. Researchers study these effects across galaxies and the broader universe.
Kamaha added that teams also try producing dark matter in particle accelerators. Meanwhile, direct detection experiments like LZ are buried deep underground. This shields them from cosmic rays and other background interference. The goal is to catch the rare moment dark matter touches ordinary matter.
While far from confirmed, the finding renews hope after decades of searching. Scientists have pursued definitive proof of dark matter for roughly 40 years.
