GUJRANWALA: Police have finalized security arrangements for 227 majalis and 192 mourning processions scheduled across Gujranwala on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, with more than 4,000 police officers and personnel set to perform security duties alongside over 1,500 volunteers.
City Police Officer (CPO) Dr Sardar Ghiyas Gul Khan said maintaining peace, religious harmony and protection of life and property remained the top priority during Muharram. He warned that strict action would be taken against elements attempting to create law and order problems.
According to police officials, all officers and personnel have been directed to remain on high alert and maintain close coordination with organisers of majalis and processions. The CPO also instructed police officers to strengthen liaison with members of district peace committees, reconciliation committees, Mohafiz committees, neighbourhood committees, traders’ representatives and other community stakeholders to ensure smooth conduct of Muharram events.
He said coordination had also been enhanced with Rescue 1122, Civil Defence, the health department, telecommunication authorities and district administration officials to deal with any emergency situation.
Police officials said concerns raised by organisers would be addressed on priority, while security personnel deployed on duty would be issued special security cards.
The CPO said action was also being taken against individuals involved in spreading fake news, rumours and inflammatory content on social media. “No violation of the law will be tolerated,” he said.
Meanwhile, authorities have activated a technology-based surveillance system to further strengthen security during Muharram across the region. Monitoring of imambargahs, majalis and processions is being carried out through panic buttons, Safe City cameras and a central control room.
Police said panic buttons had been installed at 116 imambargahs in Gujranwala and 184 in Wazirabad, enabling authorities to monitor a large number of Muharram-related gatherings and processions. Surveillance is being supported by 209 Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) cameras, more than 50 4G cameras and 240 district council cameras.
Officials said any emergency alert generated through the panic button system would immediately be relayed to the control room, allowing police, Rescue 1122 and other departments to respond without delay.
The security arrangements have been put in place to ensure peaceful observance of Muharram and to prevent any untoward incident during the religious gatherings.
